How many questions are on the NHIE?

The exam has 200 multiple-choice questions. Twenty-five are unscored pretest questions.

How much time do I have?

Four hours.

What score passes?

A scaled score of 500 on a 200–800 scale.

What does the exam usually cost?

EBPHI lists $225 per test in most states and Canada; confirm during registration.

How long must I wait to retake?

The standard wait is 30 days unless state law or regulation requires something different.

Does every state require the NHIE?

No. EBPHI says the exam is used in 35 states, but state licensing rules and additional requirements vary.

Which states use a contracted test administrator?

Florida, Illinois, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Washington licensing candidates must use the state-contracted route.

Will my score automatically go to my state?

EBPHI says no. Keep the official score report and follow the state's application process.

Does passing let me work anywhere?

No. Passing is one component; licensing, education, experience, insurance, and business requirements remain state-specific.

Are 25 pretest questions marked?

No. Candidates are not told which questions are unscored.
