Career path

Passing the NHIE does not automatically authorize work in every state.

Complete state licensing, insurance, field inspections, agreements, report systems, tools, and a first-client workflow after passing the NHIE.

01Finish the state license or registration

Submit the score report, education, field experience, insurance, application, and fees your state requires.

02Build a defensible inspection workflow

Pre-inspection agreement, standards of practice, system sequence, photos, notes, limitations, and quality review.

03Choose employment or independent practice

Work for an inspection company, pair with a mentor, or build a properly insured business.

04Protect report quality

Do not rush the first paid inspections. Use checklists, peer review, and clear recommendations.

Ask before accepting the first job

  • Does the state require an active license or registration number?
  • Does the firm provide E&O and general liability coverage?
  • Who supplies the agreement, report software, tools, and standards?
  • Will a senior inspector review early reports?
  • How are ancillary services, referrals, and conflicts handled?

Use the NHIE result as one credential, not the entire business

Passing demonstrates entry-level competence. Legal authority, insurance, field requirements, and professional systems remain state- and business-specific.
